Vancouver International Film Festival: Composer and Filmmaker Accelerator Shaping the Future of Film Music

This year, 12 talented composers will collaborate with four established filmmakers through virtual sessions and an in-person recording and mixing sessions at Vancouver’s renowned The Warehouse Studios. Their compositions will be performed by the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra. Over six weeks, participants will develop symphonic scores through collaboration with the filmmakers and mentorship from industry experts, focusing on both traditional and innovative scoring techniques. The CFA remains a pivotal program for advancing careers for emerging talent, driving forward the future of music in film.

Composing for Chinese Instruments:
With the increasing number of games made in China and for the Chinese market, it is becoming more and more essential for composers to learn the ins and outs of writing for Chinese traditional instruments. Using his score for Blue Callisto game Fantastic Creatures, composer Ian Chen offers a quick walkthrough on writing for traditional Chinese instruments, and how they may be applied in a Western symphonic setting. The session will cover everything from the introduction of instrumental family groups, to orchestration techniques, to the tools used in the recording and production of Chinese traditional instruments.

FMC-Film Music Contest 2021 is preparing for its annual global launch and registration opening for music composers, sound designers and musicians from around the world.

An elite group of professionals from the EU, USA, Asia and Australia will be made up of representatives from the music and film business who actively work for national television, the largest Asian and Hollywood film studios, cultural or theater institutions, agencies as well as for Netflix.

Ian Chen is a multi-award winning Taiwanese-Canadian composer for film, television, and video games Ian is also a Golden Bell Award (Taiwan’s equivalent of the Emmy Awards) nominee for his work on the Netflix original series GREEN DOOR, starring Taiwanese pop star Jam Hsiao and Golden Horse Award-winning actress Hsieh Ying-Xuan.

We are very excited to have Ian on board as one of the members of the FMC 2021- international music competition and awards prestigious jury.
